San Antonio, TX asked in Car Accidents, Civil Litigation and Collections for Texas

Q: Hi, I am 17 years old. Debt collectors contacted me today saying I needed to pay off a debt. Is charging a minor legal?

I bumped into an ATT company vehicle 6 months back. My grandfather’s name was on the vehicle and he cancelled the insurance without telling me, so I thought I was driving an insured vehicle. I received a bill in my name for nearly $2,500 a month after the accident and contacted ATT but never got a response. 6 months later (Today), I received a call from JNR saying I need to pay off my debt. Is it my responsibility to do so? They asked me to make monthly payments to cover the property damage. I am willing to do this just want to make sure it is lawful for debt collectors to charge a minor in this situation.

A: They may not be able to collect now but can later. Did you or your parents have insurance? That may cover this.
