Marion, IN asked in Landlord - Tenant for Michigan

Q: What are the steps to evict a roommate? He doesn't pay rent or utilities.

He needs to be out. An 80 yo women shouldn't have to live in her situation. He has no drivers license, doesn't work and has her drive him around on errands. He is verbally abusive toward her and makes the situation so uncomfortable that she spends the majority of the time in her bedroom. He is 41 who needs to find out how the real world works. No doubt she deserves some of the blame- enabling him by not taking a stand. But she is 80 and I don't know if she has the energy for any kind of confrontation. I'm wondering if approaching this legally(he's too young to live there-that kind of thing)would be a solution that would solve this matter- he has to leave or she will be evicted for breaking the rental agreement concerning age restrictions. Something needs to be done and I'm just trying to find the least confrontational solutions. Thanks in advance for your reply.

A: If this man's presence would be a lease violation, that is something for the landlord to address, but it may also negatively impact the woman. If there is a concern about her mental or emotional well-being, you could contact Adult Protective Services.

Just keep in mind that just because someone is "old" doesn't mean they can't make decisions others may find inappropriate or contrary to his or her best interest; nor does age save someone from the consequences of those decisions. In other words, if this woman is of sound mind and for whatever reason chooses to take on a 41-year-old male roommate, that may be her decision to rightfully make.
