A: For what? Lol

If you meant to ask whether you need a lawyer to file a bankruptcy case for you, the answer is No, you can file pro se, BUT,

If you represent yourself, well, there's an old saying that a lawyer who represents himself has a damn fool for a client.

If you are not a lawyer, it would be almost impossible for you to get through it without sacrificing valuable rights and interests and even the ultimate discharge of your debts, which is the whole point of the exercise.

At the very least, you should consult with a bankruptcy lawyer, be prepared to give him/her a full picture of your assets, debts, income and necessary living expenses, and listen closely to what the lawyer says.

The smart way to use a lawyer is to bring him in before you take the step into the swamp. If you wait til you're hip deep in gators, well, that's the expensive way to use a lawyer.
