Dundee, MI asked in Landlord - Tenant for Michigan

Q: In Michigan is a tenant responsible for blind slats replacement if they fall off?

If I sign the Repair/Replacement/Maintenance Costs agreement it is saying I agree and understand the charges that will be assessed if not on the inventory checklist. As a tenant I have no way of knowing how long these blinds have been up, just because the blinds were intact when I moved in doesn't mean they will never become dried out and brittle due to age and sun, some slats on the blinds have just fallen, however the apartments may hold me responsible for each slat that falls which can add up to be quite costly.

A: Generally, a landlord may not asses a charge against the tenant's security deposit for normal wear and tear. Normal wear and tear might include window coverings that degrade. The timing and facts are very specific when it comes to moving out with a security deposit and assessed fees against it. You might find "A Practical Guide for Tenants & Landlords" to be a useful resource for you.
