Potomac, MD asked in Consumer Law, Contracts, Real Estate Law and Civil Rights for Maryland

Q: Questions about state v. federal antidiscrimination laws in homeowner's associations, contracts

I need lawyers to review several related but different issues

Review an implied written contract between owner and Homeowner’s association for compensation when the HOA is incorrect.

Review complaints for ADA and FHA (housing laws) against an HOA, and help prosecute in Court.

I am a law school graduate, but these issues are tricky.

How does one resolve conflicts between application of state v. federal law in anti discrimination complaints that involve, in part, federal and state laws. How to avoid preclusion effects, need to file all claims, etc.

A: The terms of service for Justia prohibit lawyers from soliciting business here. The web site is for general information and access to justice. I've often written, however, on how to find a lawyer. I’ve written this same answer several times on Quora, and I don’t have enough time to rewrite it, so, I’m offering a re-publication from September 2, 2018:

“Lawyers are supposed to aid in the administration of justice, so here are a few ideas:

1. Ask a lawyer you know and trust for a referral. That is a tried and true system that has worked for many generations.

2. Go modern and Internet by surfing to <http://www.avvo.com>. Enter your county [and state] and [the area of law]. Read the client reviews and attorney endorsements as well as the ratings. Ignore the ads.

3. Surf over to <http://martindale.com>. In book form, this is the source lawyers have been using since sometime in the 1890’s. The ratings are legitimate. The listings are, again, just paid advertising. As a result, it may be difficult to find the best lawyers by looking at the ads. Ignore the ads. Find someone by another means, and then qualify them by seeing if they are rated.

4. Try a local Bar referral service. I don’t know of a referral service operated by the ABA, and the ABA is a voluntary membership organization that at least half of all lawyers don’t join. Local Bars maintain referral lists for the same reason that I’m answering this question, but the lawyers who pay (a fairly small amount, usually) to get listed there may or may not be the best lawyers. Referral from a Bar referral service is not an endorsement of that lawyer.”
