A: In NY, your junior license holder will be suspended for 60 days if you commit a serious traffic violation. A serious traffic violation usually means a violation with 3 or more points. In NY, a speeding offense, if convicted, carries 3 points if your speed was 1-10mph over the speed limit. Yes, only 1mph over will take your license away.

You should consult with a local attorney and decide if you can possibly reduce it to something else (such as failure to obey a traffic signal with 2 points or even no point violation) when your case is pending in outside NYC or if you should fight all the way to trial, etc.

Anyone can speed up and go fast with no or little skills, but not everyone knows how to slow down and stop properly.

Good luck and stay safe.
