Hesperia, CA asked in Child Custody and Family Law for California

Q: What steps are needed to initiate custody of my grand children (2)?

Two grand daughters age 3 & 2. They have lived with me and my wife since Birth. We have care for and provided for their health and welfare o date. Bother the parents, my son and girl friend both are/have been in my home also. Neither of them does anything to provide for these children and in fact neither work and both have drug and alcohol issues. No matter the support and/or encouragement we have provided to them both over these year as instilled anything in them to create a productive live for themselves and in turn for these children. Them do not bath, change, or get the children dressed unless my wife and I get on them. Luckily, my wife and I work from home to be able to care for these babies

A: As grandparents you do not have standing to petition for custody. You can obtain visitation rights, or if the circumstances warrant it, you can apply for legal guardianship. The steps to take for either scenario are on the Court's website (Superior Court for the State of California). There is a link for "self-help"
