West Springfield, MA asked in Insurance Bad Faith for Massachusetts

Q: My car insurance was mishandled & not completed by an agent. Can I switch to a new company since they cancelled it?

I changed auto insurance in Feb. the agent did not set up my deductions from my payroll or bank account properly. I was never once notified and just received a bill for coverage that was not properly handled. I no longer trust this company and they are also trying to raise the rate suddenly. Can I switch to a new auto insurance company since this company did not complete my policy correctly and made 0 effort in getting ahold of me to rectify any issues or even follow up with me? I was just surprised to find a back logged bill and they admit my agent handled it wrong, I have them on record saying this. They are saying I was covered for that time but I see no proof that I was? I don’t trust them, this is very unprofessional and I would like to go with a different insurance company. Am I allowed to? Or will they try to bill me for services rendered seemingly on “good faith” especially in the state of MA it can effect my registration.

A: A Massachusetts attorney could advise best, but your question remains open for a week. Throughout the nation, one is usually free to change insurance carriers as a general rule. There is no reason necessary, and people do it all the time. How you'll be billed could depend on the terms of the policy and how the carrier pro rates refunds. State departments of insurance usually have educational resources and information hotlines for consumers on insurance topics, including auto. The Massachusetts Division of Insurance might be worth contacting for guidance on state-specific issues. Good luck
