A: In Ohio, you can legally create and operate a motorized bicycle or moped if it meets certain requirements. To be street legal, the motor should have a piston displacement of 50cc or less, and the vehicle's maximum speed shouldn't exceed 20 mph on a flat surface. If you're 14 or 15, you'll need a moped operator's license to ride; if you're 16 or older, a valid driver's license or temporary instruction permit identification card is sufficient. Registration isn't necessary, but you should carry identification. Equip your vehicle with lights, horn or bell, and a mirror, and if you're under 18, wear a helmet. Follow traffic laws and refrain from riding on sidewalks.
