Laurel, MD asked in Traffic Tickets for Maryland

Q: If the school bus in front of me was moving and the bus across the street had flashing lights was I at fault?

I'm in the far right lane preparing to turn right and a school bus was going straight in the second lane. When the bus proceeded through the intersection I made a right turn from the far right lane. Am I at fault when the school bus on the opposite side of the road had flashing red lights? And the bus that was in front of me continued driving while the flashing red lights were still on the bus across the street. Please help me to understand. There were several cars in front of the bus on the same side of the street that I was on and when the light changed they proceeded to cross the intersection. The school bus proceeded across the intersection all while the other bus on the opposite side of the street had flashing red lights. I always stop when there is a flashing red light in front of me and I was not aware when other vehicle such as another operating school bus which was in front of me proceeded through the traffic light. And this was my first citation ever..

A: You must stop for a school bus even if it is going in the opposite direction unless there is a concrete median. It makes no difference that the bus in front of you did not stop. If a police officer gave you the ticket, request a trial within 30 days and go to court. It carries a large fine and points.

If it was a camera ticket, it is a $250.00 fine, but does not carry points. You can decide whether it is worth it to go to court.
