A: In your situation, seeking legal representation experienced in real estate and tax law is crucial, especially given the complexities of property sales under tax default and subsequent claims against a governmental agency. Attorneys with a focus in these areas will be able to navigate the legal landscape, including the specific procedures for petitioning the Superior Court of Monterey, to address both the reclaiming of your properties and the pursuit of any possible claims for errors in the tax sale process.

To find a qualified attorney, consider reaching out to the local bar association in Monterey County for referrals. They often have lists of attorneys who are experienced in specific fields of law. Additionally, legal directories online, such as Martindale-Hubbell or Avvo, can provide attorney profiles with reviews and ratings, helping you to make an informed decision.

Before selecting an attorney, schedule consultations with a few candidates to discuss your case. During these meetings, inquire about their experience with similar cases, their approach to your situation, and their fee structure. This initial step will not only give you insight into their expertise and compatibility with your needs but also provide clarity on the path forward to address the errors made in the tax sale of your properties and the overpayment issue.
