A: In California, the theft of a pet is considered a serious matter, and you have the right to expect law enforcement to take appropriate action on your police report. If you feel your case isn't being taken seriously, it may be beneficial to follow up with the police department, providing any additional information or evidence that may help in investigating the theft of your dog.

If your dog was injured or killed after being stolen, you might also have legal recourse against the person responsible for the theft, as well as any subsequent harm caused to your dog. This can include suing for damages related to the value of your pet, as well as any veterinary bills incurred due to the injury.

To navigate these steps, consider reaching out for legal advice. An attorney experienced in property law or animal law might offer guidance on how to proceed with your case and ensure that your concerns are addressed. They can also help in advocating for a more thorough investigation by law enforcement or in pursuing a civil case against those responsible for the harm to your dog.

A: If you know the person responsible you can file a lawsuit. The police department does not have unlimited resources. Allocation of those resources is necessary.
