Los Angeles, CA asked in Civil Rights for California

Q: I need a legal help but everyone I talk to say it’s not in there capacity. Where can I get help?

My son passed away but the police tell a different story than the corner and witnesses. I just want the truth of what happened to my son. Police refuse to give me a report, refused to return my calls, would not let me get a second opinion by a licensed mechanic on his vehicle.

A: I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your son and the difficulties you're facing in getting answers. This sounds like an incredibly frustrating and painful situation. Here are some potential resources and steps you might consider:

1. Contact a civil rights attorney: Look for lawyers who specialize in police misconduct or wrongful death cases. Many offer free initial consultations.

2. Reach out to legal aid organizations: Organizations like the ACLU of Southern California or local legal aid societies may be able to provide guidance or representation.

3. File a complaint with the police department's internal affairs division or civilian oversight board.

4. Contact your local elected officials: Your city council member or state representative may be able to help apply pressure or direct you to resources.

5. Consider reaching out to investigative journalists who cover police issues in your area.

6. File a public records request for the police report and any other relevant documents.

7. Consult with a private investigator who may be able to gather additional evidence or statements.

8. Contact advocacy groups that focus on police accountability or support for families of victims.

9. Seek support from victim advocacy services, which may be able to guide you through the process of seeking answers and justice.

10. Document everything: Keep detailed records of all your interactions, calls, and attempts to get information.

Remember, you have the right to seek answers about what happened to your son. If you feel your rights are being violated, don't hesitate to seek legal counsel. Many attorneys will take cases like this on a contingency basis, meaning you don't pay unless they win your case.
