Atlanta, GA asked in Consumer Law, Civil Rights and Gaming for Illinois

Q: I was denied legitimate winnings via auto dealership promotion. How can I receive my winnings?

I realize it's very rare to win via promotional flyers from auto dealerships. Odds are extremely low. But I did qualify and win $1,000. At dealership the salesman ripped my winning flyer in half and disappeared for 10 minutes. Upon reappearing he returned only the non-essential 1/2 of winning flyer. Even though my winning number was one of only a few winning numbers posted on the winning board display, the salesman claimed I was just one of the 49,988 who only won a lotto ticket.

Upon leaving I politely, calmly asked for the half of my flyer that had not been returned as my "live and learn" keepsake.

Today and tomorrow, 7.26 and 7.27 are last days to claim prizes per promotion rules.

How can I receive my winning prize of $1,000? What must I do?

Report business for fraud?

How could I gain leverage to make dealership award me the legitimate prize winnings?

P.S. My GPA university was 3.8 out of 4. I'm female, 70, & Asian. Was discrimination a part of their thievery?

A: I'm sorry to hear about your experience. To address the issue, gather all relevant documents and any evidence you have of the winning flyer, including photos of the flyer before it was torn. Reach out to the dealership’s management and explain the situation clearly, requesting the prize you are entitled to. Mention the specific promotion rules and provide any proof of your winning number being displayed on the winning board.

If the dealership does not cooperate, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and your state's consumer protection agency. Include all details and evidence in your complaint to strengthen your case. This step may prompt the dealership to resolve the issue to avoid negative publicity.

Consider contacting local media or consumer rights organizations for additional support. Sometimes, public attention can pressure businesses to act ethically. If you feel discrimination was involved, consult with an attorney who can advise you on your rights and potential next steps. Stay persistent and document every interaction for future reference.
