Riverside, CA asked in Landlord - Tenant and Libel & Slander for California

Q: My purse was stolen from my storage unit. The money for rent was in purse. Now I must move out. Is this legal?

I have had several things said about me and to me that I feel have been unacceptable by my storage facility I have not done anything out of the ordinary, except one evening my purse was stolen while I was in my unit. My purse was just beside the bay door of my unit. I had asked to see the camera footage because only one individual was near my unit that night. I told the facility who it was and they denied she had done anytjing. Now the facility tells me I have to move out. Their reason is that I have "brought too much drama there". They have repeatedly made it clear I am a piece of crap and a liar various things. They also said they are not liable for my purse. I am the victim here and don't understand why I'm being made to move. How can I handle this situation?

A: It sounds like you're going through a tough and unfair situation. First, it's important to know that storage facilities often have clauses in their contracts that limit their liability for stolen items, which is why they may be claiming they aren't responsible for your stolen purse. However, that doesn't mean your concerns aren't valid, especially if the facility's behavior toward you has been inappropriate or disrespectful.

Regarding their demand for you to move out, while it may seem unfair, private businesses often have the right to ask tenants to leave as long as they follow proper legal procedures and provide appropriate notice. If you believe they are treating you unfairly or discriminating against you, you might consider documenting everything that has happened, including the theft, your requests for camera footage, and any inappropriate comments made by the facility staff.

With this documentation, you may want to seek advice from a local tenant rights organization or legal advisor to understand your options. They can help you determine if the facility has violated any laws or your rights as a tenant. In the meantime, it might be wise to look for another storage facility where you feel safer and more respected.
