Union City, NJ asked in Libel & Slander for New York

Q: Where can I hire a lawyer for a defamation case in NY on a contingency basis?

I am the plaintiff. I have already filed a complaint with the NY Supreme Court, and I, now, must serve the defendants as soon as possible.

A: That could be a difficult order to fill. Defamation cases are sometimes handled on a contingency basis, but many law firms may instead go with charging hourly. Each case can be different, but generally speaking, slander and libel cases often pose an element of uncertainty in the outcome. This makes law firms reluctant to go with a standard one-third contingency fee ordinarily seen in personal injury cases.

To answer your question, ask around if any firms would be willing to consider your matter on contingency. In addition to your own independent attorney searches, you could use the tab above, "Find a Lawyer," as well the attorney referral sections of state and local bar associations. Those resources fall outside this Q & A forum, so any arrangements would be between you and the law firms you reach out to. Good luck
