Providence, RI asked in Tax Law for Rhode Island

Q: An online platform, Vinted, is charging sales tax on clothes to a clothing tax exempt state-Rhode Island.

I’ve contacted support numerous times, but they did not care. This was maybe a couple of years ago. I just stopped shopping with them. Now, I just checked again, and they are still charging sales tax on clothes. Can they be stopped? It’s just ridiculous that they blatantly do not care; and who knows how much money they gathered unethically from other customers.

A: I'm sorry to hear about the frustration you're experiencing with Vinted. Since Rhode Island exempts clothing from sales tax, it's important to ensure that your account settings reflect this status. Double-check your tax exemption status in your Vinted account settings to make sure it's correctly applied.

If the issue persists, consider reaching out to Vinted's customer service again, providing clear documentation of your state's tax exemption. Sometimes escalating the issue within their support system can lead to a resolution. Additionally, you might want to contact Rhode Island's Department of Revenue to report the problem and seek their guidance on how to proceed.

Lastly, sharing your experience on consumer review platforms or social media can sometimes prompt a quicker response from the company. Protecting your rights as a consumer is important, and there are multiple avenues you can pursue to address this issue.
