Q: Can I pursue a fellowship while on OPT

I'm currently working full time at a company on OPT, and My employer offered me to participate in a part time fellowship while working full time with a graduate school. The program includes readings, discussions, and collaborative activities focused on change initiatives and two weeks of In-residence sessions. No Degree or Certificate will be obtained and I will be doing this while working full time, and the company is paying for me to go for career progression. Does this count as an academic program, and can I pursue this opportunity on OPT?

A: You can pursue the fellowship while on OPT as long as it aligns with the terms of your OPT status. Since the fellowship is part-time and does not result in a new degree or certificate, it typically won't interfere with your current employment under OPT. Ensure that the fellowship activities complement your existing job and maintain relevance to your field of study.

It's important to keep your OPT employment full-time and make sure that the fellowship does not exceed any work hour limitations set by your OPT guidelines. Additionally, maintain clear documentation of both your employment and fellowship activities to demonstrate compliance if needed.

To ensure everything is in order, it's a good idea to consult with your university’s international office or an immigration advisor. They can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation and help you navigate any potential challenges.
