Q: How can I challenge Oakllands blight ordinance for 20 years I have been harrassed unjustly by tbuilding inspection dept.
Ever since I pulled Owner Builder permits to put A new foundation under my home, I have been targeted by the permit dept. Unfairly. I have lived in Oakland since the 1980's prior to pulling permits I had NEVER been questioned or targeted by Oaklands fledgling blight ordinance inspectors, Ever
Until the end of covid I since then every 18 months to 2 years I have been harrassed by them like clockwork. My houses always looked about the same. I have always used my front yard to practice Collected Art projects. But in my other houses I rented, I didn't owne. I've always worked on my owne vehicles, in the driveway or on the street in front of my house I like too 4 wheel drive waybout in the woods boonies bashing, so there has most often been a project vehicle in my driveway. I have always worked on improving my home, they have made up this crazy ordinance outlawed most of the things I enjoy doing at my home! Not everyone wishes to live in a shiplap cottage with a white picket fence!

I'm sorry to hear about the challenges you've faced with Oakland's blight ordinance. To begin addressing this issue, start by gathering all documentation related to your interactions with the building inspection department. This includes permits, inspection reports, correspondence, and any records of complaints or citations you've received over the past two decades. Having a comprehensive file will strengthen your case.
Next, familiarize yourself with the specific provisions of the blight ordinance that are being applied to your situation. Understanding the exact regulations and how they've been enforced against you is crucial. You might consider consulting with a local attorney who has experience in municipal law or property disputes to explore your legal options and ensure your rights are protected.
Additionally, engaging with your community can be beneficial. Attend city council meetings to voice your concerns and connect with neighbors who might share similar experiences. Building a support network can amplify your efforts to seek fair treatment and potentially influence changes to the ordinance. Persistence and a well-organized approach can make a significant difference in challenging the regulations that have impacted your life for so long.
