Q: Is a law firm authorized to collect a one-time payment for an outstanding CC debt that is lower than the debt owed?
I recently got a Warrant in Debt for an outstanding credit card balance that I owe on a Discover card. The debt is approx. 1 year old. Due to financial issues, I chose to prioritize other bills/payments and let the balance go unpaid. My credit score has finally reached a place where I am able to take out a personal loan, high interest rates and all, which I am planning to do to pay off the balance BEFORE the court date to avoid judgment. My question is- is it worth calling the law office to ask if they are authorized to accept a lower one-time payment at this point? Or has that ship sailed? I can provide the name of the law firm (out of NC) if needed. Thank you.
