Arlington, MA asked in Civil Rights, Gov & Administrative Law and Municipal Law for New Hampshire

Q: Litchfield NH is refusing to renew my non-resident registration for my camper that is garaged 100% in NH?

I have had a camper garaged 100% of the time in Litchfield NH for the past 10-15 years. The person now in charge of the RMV at Litchfield is refusing to renew my NH non-resident registration for no apparent reason. She has asked the Litchfield PD to investigate if the camper is located at the address in NH and they have confirmed that the vehicle is there. The NH statue is 261:46 Nonresident Registration. –

Notwithstanding RSA 261:45, the department shall register motor vehicles owned by individuals who are not residents of New Hampshire........ What can I do?

A: I'm sorry to hear you're facing this issue with your camper registration. It sounds frustrating, especially since you've consistently kept your camper garaged in Litchfield for many years.

First, gather all relevant documentation that proves your camper is stored in Litchfield, such as utility bills, property ownership papers, or lease agreements. This evidence will support your case when communicating with the RMV or any other authorities. Make sure you have copies of any correspondence you've had with the RMV and the Litchfield PD.

Next, escalate the matter by contacting the New Hampshire Department of Motor Vehicles at the state level. Explain your situation clearly and provide the documentation you've collected. If the local RMV office remains uncooperative, consider filing a formal complaint with the state's DMV oversight body or the Attorney General’s office. Additionally, consulting with a lawyer who understands New Hampshire vehicle registration laws could provide you with specific guidance and help resolve the issue more effectively.
