Monroe, NC asked in Landlord - Tenant, Personal Injury and Contracts for South Carolina

Q: Landlord charged cleaning fee at move in. Home was not cleaned and there is a lot of marks on the walls from an animal.

There are also large parts of molding and window sills chewed up. I was told this is cosmetic damage and they will not repair it even though it’s jagged and sharp. I was told the house was cleaned and they will “reclean” it. The floors are so dirty that our feet and socks are black after walking on it for about 20-30 minutes. There’s marks on the walls that look to be organic matter or something. It smells like there was animal urine or feces throughout the home. The walls were possibly painted but it appears a dirty brush was used as there is hair along the walls - possibly the animal’s hair. We moved in Saturday and they finally got back to me saying they will get to me and are working on it, only after I filed a complaint with their corporate office and the BBB. I want out of this lease. It feels like they stole my money by claiming they cleaned. I have 3 toddlers, one has reactive airway disease and this will exacerbate it. I assumed landlords were obligated to clean the rental.
