Q: 'Facility Fee' of $1,500(!)

Hello,

I have a question concerning if a 'facility fee' of $1,500(!) from a fertility clinic is deceptive and predatory. Do I have a right to request a detailed, itemized breakdown of an obscure, arbitrary fee from a fertility clinic that my wife and I are attending. Also, the staff at the clinic told me that everyone has to pay the fee and insurance companies rarely cover that fee. Even though the clinic DID disclose that they charge this fee, they DID NOT disclose that they know that insurance companies do not cover the fee. The amount seems excessive and arbitrary, as well. I would like to know EXACTLY how each dollar is being allocated. I really appreciate any legal clarification or possible avenues that my wife and I can pursue (if any). Thank you for your time!

A: For starters, request a detailed explanation of the $1,500 fee. The clinic may provide a breakdown if pressed. Discuss this with a lawyer to see if maybe you have a claim.

A: I'm sorry for your unpleasant surprise with the fee not being covered. The most practical starting point would be to request a breakdown of the fee, as my colleague points out. If you did consult with an attorney to review things with attorneys and health care matters, that would be among the first things they'd ask for - the fees, how they're made up, which fee schedules applied, covered and denied components, EOBs, etc. Good luck
