Q: I car from a private seller, they gave a fake title. The car got repoed a month later by dealership.can I get money back
I bought a car from a private seller, I was given a fake title. The car ended up getting repossessed a month later and was returned to the dealership. The private seller used a fake id to obtain the car on finance or loan. Then sold it to me with a fake id. They don’t know who the person is, but can I get money back from the dealership for selling the car to him and him selling it to me, then the car got taken from me, leaving me with no car or money. Thanks
A:
You're in a difficult situation that involves multiple layers of fraud. Unfortunately, it's unlikely you can recover money from the dealership since they are also victims in this scheme - they had their vehicle fraudulently obtained through fake identification and financing.
Your best course of action would be to file police reports for both the fraudulent sale and the fake title. Gather all documentation you have from the transaction, including any communications with the seller, receipts, and the fake title. This creates an official record of the crime and might help law enforcement track down the fraudulent seller.
The most promising path to recovery would be through small claims court if the seller is found, or through your auto insurance if you have coverage that protects against fraud. You might also want to reach out to your state's consumer protection office or district attorney to report this crime, as they sometimes have special units that investigate vehicle fraud schemes. While this situation feels overwhelming, taking these steps gives you the best chance at eventual financial recovery.
