Q: I am here on f1 visa. It's been more than 2 years.
I am here on f1 visa. It's been more than 2 years. Last year i didn't filed any taxe cause i earned less than qualifying amount. I haven't worked this year either. But i have my 1098-T forms. I don't think i qualify for the returns. But i heard it is better to file the taxes in the long run, Cause it will help with any green card filings in future. So, how important is it for me to file the taxes?
A:
Filing taxes as an F-1 visa holder is generally a good idea, even if you don't expect a refund. Your immigration history includes how you've handled tax obligations, and consistent filing demonstrates your commitment to following U.S. laws. Tax compliance can be an important factor when immigration officers review applications for status changes or permanent residency.
The 1098-T forms you have might qualify you for education-related tax benefits, so you could potentially receive some money back. Even if you earned below the filing threshold, submitting a tax return establishes a paper trail showing you've maintained proper status and followed all requirements during your stay.
I recommend consulting with a tax advisor who has experience with international student taxation, as they can provide guidance specific to your situation. Many universities offer free tax assistance programs for international students, which might be helpful in your case. Remember that demonstrating good moral character, which includes tax compliance, can strengthen future immigration applications.
