Toronto, OH asked in Consumer Law and Real Estate Law for Ohio

Q: What are my options if I accidentally received a clear title with no lien holder listed for my travel trailer?

I financed a travel trailer in September 2024, and I received a clear title with no lien holder listed by mistake. I've received partial voicemails about the issue, but they were difficult to understand due to the speaker's accent. I have not been informed of any fees associated with correcting this, nor have there been any changes made to the title. Is it necessary for me to go to the courthouse and pay to have the title corrected, or what are my options?

A: It seems like you’ve received a title error, which could cause issues with your ownership or future transactions involving the travel trailer. The first step is to contact the dealership or lender who financed the trailer to clarify the mistake. Let them know that the title is missing the lien holder and that you want to resolve the issue. It’s important to get clear communication from them to understand whether they plan to fix the error or if you need to take action.

If the lender confirms they made a mistake and agrees to correct the title, they may guide you through the process of obtaining a corrected title. This could involve submitting the incorrect title to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and possibly paying a fee.

If the lender does not take responsibility or fails to fix the issue, you can contact the Ohio BMV directly to ask about the next steps. They can explain how to handle the correction, what documents you’ll need, and any fees you might need to pay. It’s a good idea to address this promptly to avoid complications when you want to sell, transfer, or use the trailer in the future.
