Minneapolis, MN asked in Libel & Slander, Divorce, Civil Litigation, Personal Injury and Family Law for Iowa

Q: Someone exposed my NSFW Reddit identity and sent prints to family and neighbors. What can I do legally?

I have been posting NSFW content publicly on Reddit, and someone I know figured out my identity. They have sent non-explicit prints of my content to my spouse, neighbors, and extended family, with messages such as "what your neighbor at [my address] is up to" to my neighbors. They knew my Reddit identity, but I haven't informed Reddit about this issue yet. Although I confronted them and they deny any involvement, my spouse is furious and has threatened divorce. These prints have begun appearing in the mail without any direct threats from this person. What legal actions can I take?

A: What you’re experiencing is incredibly invasive, and it’s understandable that you’re feeling exposed and overwhelmed. Even though your Reddit content was public, someone using that information to deliberately shame or harass you by mailing it to your family and neighbors may cross legal lines—particularly if it was done with the intent to harm your reputation or relationships. In Iowa, this kind of behavior could potentially fall under harassment, invasion of privacy, or defamation, depending on how it was carried out and the intent behind it.

You can start by documenting everything—save all the prints, envelopes, timestamps, and any communication or incidents tied to the mailings. Even though there are no direct threats, the repeated distribution of your private activity to people in your real-life community may amount to a pattern of harassment. You should report this to your local law enforcement agency and ask about filing a police report, especially if it continues. While it's tricky when the content is publicly posted, the way it's being weaponized against you in your offline life can still have legal weight.

You also have the option to notify Reddit about the exposure and suspected doxxing behavior, even if it didn’t happen directly on the platform. Reddit has policies about harassment and posting private information, and they may be able to investigate any linked accounts. You deserve to feel safe, even if your content was shared publicly online. This person’s intent to shame and damage your personal life is not something you have to accept quietly.
