Q: Xarelto - Who will be a voice for the sub-populations?
My mother died from a pulmonary embolism on 08/31/2016 while taking Xarelto. Her death comes 5 months after being in the ICU in March of 2016, and, after her Wafarin was replaced with Xarelto in the fall of 2015. When she was released from the hospital she was put back on Xarelto, and now, 5 months later she is dead.
The answer I have gotten is I don't have a case, because she isn't fitting into the "profile" for people injured or killed by Xarelto. My issue with Xarelto, comes after contacting the director of the John Hopkins Special Laboratory, asking if he could help me identify where people who have hypercoagulable disorders caused by distinct genetic mutations, to inquire specifically about the clinical trials and studies done on this drug, the evidence isn't there that I can see, showing where long term treatment with Xarelto is safe or effective.
What will be done for the people who die or get repeat embolisms because it should have never been prescribed?
A: From your description it sounds like the facts may lead an attorney to research whether the prescribing of Xarelto was contraindicated for your parent and thus would fall into a medical malpractice/wrongful death matter. If you haven't already, i would consult an attorney who specializes in medical negligence matters. Be prepared to retrieve all of the relevant medical and hospital records that were associated with the care and treatment of your mother. If an autopsy was done, that would certainly be helpful on determining a more precise cause of death.

A:
I believe I answered your question earlier as to who will take the case. Generally, what you are hearing is that your mother doesn't fit the profile of people who would likely not have any issues but for the xarelto. Your mom's case is too risky.
As to who will speak, I had suggested you contact the Health Research Group and Common Cause to see how to go about it.
