Jersey City, NJ asked in Traffic Tickets, Insurance Defense and Municipal Law for New Jersey

Q: 2 tckts on me at a scene. Reckless driving & Improper turn at signal. Tckt is not yet on system. Shd I consult lawyr bfr

I am an international graduate student, graduating this December.

On Nov 6th, I mistakenly (assuming it is a legal turn as I did not notice the sign board which is kept to the other side) took a wrong left turn on a highway junction. The (bmw) car coming from the other side hit my car towards the rear wheel. No body were hurt at the scene and there is little to less moderate damage to vehicles. I was given 2 tickets; 1- Reckless driving and 2-Improper turn at signal. As of yet the ticket is not yet on the NJMCdirect online system; On these tickets, officer checked to attend the court. But as I call to courts help desk, they suggested to wait until the ticket is available online as it is up to officer.

I am driving friends car for the first time. I am not covered in any vehicle insurance. I seek some advice to see what I should do in this situation to avoid any implication? As i am international student on study loans, I could not afford much to lawyers. Please advice! Thanks much.

A: If you are charged with reckless driving you definitely need to hire a lawyer becase for a first offense you face up to 60 days in jail and or a fine plus 5 points on your license plus 3 points for the improper turn giving you a total of 8 points. Add in the fact that the insurance did not have you as a listed insured you need a lawyer to make sure you get a civil reservation in court so that any plea of guilty can't be used against you in a civil suit.
