Nashua, NH asked in Consumer Law and Products Liability for California

Q: Is it illegal for a company to refuse a warranty claim when the product states "Lifetime Warranty" on the retail box?

Retail product states "lifetime replacements" but the manufacturer is claiming they have a stipulation written on their website that says you must buy the item directly from them in order to get a lifetime warranty. The packaging/paperwork provided with the product does not mention this at all. I purchased this product from Amazon.com over a year ago and I chose this brand because of the lifetime warranty and felt it was from a well known CA based company with a good reputation. When I complained about this policy the company stated they reserve the right to deny claims "for any or no reason". This seems a little deceptive to me.

A: That does sound deceptive, and may be a false advertising violation and a violation of the California consumer legal remedies act. However, although you have posted this in the California consumer law area, your post states you are in NH. You would have to ask a NH attorney about law there, if that is where your transaction took place. There may also be federal law violations.

A: You may have a claim for breach of warranty. Other consumer protection laws may also apply.
