The city I live in replaced all the main sewer lines this past summer about 8 months ago. Since then, three houses in a row, including mine, have experienced ruptured pipes on our properties. Other homeowners on the street and other streets have experienced the same thing.

Two homeowners were told by independent plumbers that the pressure for the new main lines ruptured their pipes. Now I'm looking at the same work my neighbors just experienced (both paying over 10k for the replacement of their pipes). I understand that the lateral drains from the main line to the homes are the homeowners' responsibility, but in the case that the city's work caused actual damage to homeowner's pipes that were otherwise fine, shouldn't they still be culpable in some way? If so, how can it be proved?

A: The neighbors should band together and hire an engineer to inspect and determine a cause for the problem, then the neighbors can retain an attorney to review the situation, talk with the city, and try to find a resolution.
