Irvine, CA asked in Consumer Law for California

Q: Is there a way for me to get my money back?

I resell bikes and I happened to buy a stolen bike and tried to sell it. This is my second time of trying to sell a stolen bike. The first time I sold the bike to someone but they traced the bike back to me. The second time the bike was taken from me and I was wondering if I can get my money back. The cops also told me to be careful with buying bikes, however there are so many bikes and its really hard to make sure they are all safe. I have reselled 200 bike and 2 of them were stolen bikes. What should I do and I was hoping I would be able to keep reselling bikes.

A: The police obviously have a record O stolen bikes. Before purchasing you should check with the police to see if the bike is stolen?

Make sure to get the contact information from the seller with the driver's license. Then in trace the stolen bike...

A: A legitimate seller of a bicke to you should not have a problem to provide you with 1. a bill of sale stating they are the owner, and 2. some govt issued ID with their photo on it. If they are not willing to do that and the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Otherwise you can check with the local police as to whether the bike is stolen, but it might have been stolen from somewhere else, like LA. The business you are in is ripe for you to be victimized by thieves who use you as their "fence".
