La Puente, CA asked in Civil Rights for California

Q: On what terms or civil code can I use to protect my rights NOT to use a face covering in any store or dental office?

I told dental office it went against my religious believes and it also posed a health risk to wear a mask. They allowed me services without wearing one but after I was finished and waiting to pay they asked me to put one on..again I told them I could not..so they told me to find another dentist

A: As far as I am aware you do not have the right to engage in acquisition or transmission of a communicable disease, which is why there are emergency regulations requiring you to wear a mask, even if it slightly infringes on your right to practice a religion. The rights granted to you by the Bill of Rights are not absolute, they are subject to reasonable regulation by the Government, particular in times of national emergency, which this pandemic has caused. Social distancing works. Sheltering at home prevents acquisition and transmission of COVID. Wearing a Mask also works. Resistance to these concepts has been discredited by every credible public health official and doctor. (Voodoo doctors have said that the disease is caused by demons but they are not credible). We have almost 160,000 dead and more dying every day because people in this country did not take this seriously, and claimed they were !entitled! to some exemption from inhibition in acquisition and transmission of the disease. Please be considerate of others and wear a mask to protect other people, just think of Jesus, who volunteered to die so man could be redeemed from the sin of listening to Satan, and give up something for the safety of others.

A: I agree with Mr. Mandel. We are in a national pandemic. You do not have a personal right to opt out of health directories when all businesses in California have been ordered to require mask usage in order to take advantage of their services while on their premises. In order to enjoy the civil rights we have, we all have an obligation to follow the health guidelines set out when we are all facing a disease which kills so many people indiscriminately. For any of us to be safe, we all must do our part. Your religion does not protect anyone else if you get the virus and start spreading it to other people who may be more vulnerable. It is of vital importance that we all practice social distancing and the wearing of masks when we go out in public places or places of business or services such as a dental office.

The dentist office was perfectly within their rights to tell you to find another dentist if you refuse to follow the rules which apply to all of us. Your religious freedom does not protect you in these trying times.

I'm also unaware of any religious or spiritual group which has a prohibition from covering one's face, whether or not there is a pandemic affecting the whole world.
