A: It depends where it happens and where you reside. In general, under principles of comity, Virginia recognizes a marriage as valid if it was valid in the place where celebrated, unless it offends the strong public policy of the Commonwealth. In Virginia, a bigamous marriage is void. Bigamy is a crime. As such, if you intend to return to Virginia, I doubt Virginia would recognize a bigamous marriage as a valid marriage. In addition, the commission of a crime might affect your status in the U.S. and your ability to obtain a temporary resident alien permit, is you chose to pursue one.

You should first consult with an experienced Virginia family law lawyer to discuss any contemplated bigamous marriage.
