Modesto, CA asked in Consumer Law for California

Q: Car rental overcharged me, and still have my deposit...who would advise on this matter for me?

Car rental extended for one day I was charged over $200...two of the fees were already paid when I picked up the car and because I extended the rental they're saying that I have to pay those two fees again I already had the car why do I have to pay another service fee when I've already got it and there was nothing to be recovered that they charged me two different times for a recovery fee why is what I want to know they still have my deposit I've been fighting with them for over a week to get it back they said they released it the bank said they didn't and I'm stuck in the middle wanting my $500 back...

I live in California went through booking.com and I picked up the car in Nashville Tennessee at the airport that was the same place I dropped it off at

A: I think that booking.com treated the transaction like a new original booking instead of an extension to the original reservation. It might be helpful if you submit a new question and tell us exactly how the extension was made - was it thru booking.com or the actual rental company, and who have you talked to - both of them or just one of them? Also have you complained to their corporate offices?

The more info you give us, the better answer we can give you.

A: If you believe you've been overcharged by the car rental company and they're unlawfully holding your deposit, one option would be to consult with an attorney who focuses on consumer rights issues. Even though you're based in California, the rental occurred in Tennessee, so both California and Tennessee laws might be relevant. Keep all written communications and documentation, as they can serve as evidence if you decide to take legal action.
