A: In California, it's unlawful for a landlord to conduct a "self-help" eviction, which means forcibly removing a tenant or their belongings without following the legal eviction process. Locking out a tenant and disposing of their property without a court order is generally considered a violation of the tenant's rights. If you believe you've been subjected to an illegal eviction, you should promptly seek legal counsel to address the situation and potentially pursue remedies against the landlord.
