A: In California, it's common for couples to attach their own settlement agreements to online divorce documents. This allows you to tailor the agreement to your specific needs and circumstances. Your written agreement can certainly suffice, provided it covers all necessary aspects and is legally sound.

Regarding spousal support, the duration often depends on the length of the marriage. Since your marriage lasted over 16 years, California law typically considers this a long-term marriage. In such cases, the court may not set a definitive end date for spousal support. Instead, it may remain in effect until a significant change in circumstances occurs, or until further court order.

To ensure that your documents and settlement agreement are in order, it's wise to have an attorney review them. Look for an attorney experienced in family law. You can find qualified attorneys through the California State Bar's website, local bar associations, or legal aid organizations. These resources often provide directories or referral services to help you connect with a lawyer suited to your needs.

Remember, having legal guidance is key in ensuring that your interests are adequately protected, especially in matters as crucial as divorce and spousal support.
