A: In California, if you're facing retaliation from a residential property manager after lodging a complaint, you have several options to protect yourself and seek remedies. First, document all instances of retaliation in detail, including dates, times, and descriptions of each event. This documentation can be crucial if you decide to take legal action or need to provide evidence of the retaliation.

Next, you should consider filing a complaint with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH). They handle cases related to discrimination and retaliation in housing. Filing a complaint can initiate an investigation into your claims and potentially lead to mediation or other resolution processes. You can file a complaint online through their website.

Lastly, it might be wise to consult with a lawyer who has experience in tenant rights. Legal professionals can offer guidance specific to your situation and may help you communicate with housing authorities or the property management company. They can also represent you in legal proceedings if necessary. Remember, you have the right to seek help and address grievances without fear of unfair treatment.
