Fair Oaks, CA asked in Consumer Law and Health Care Law for California

Q: Is there a way to have Walgreens reimburse money paid for prescriptions?

Is there a way Walgreen can reimburse her some funds?

My sister has been getting her prescriptions filled at Walgreens. She was paying big prices than she should have. She is not well and is seventy-three years old. We found GoodRX has offered much lower prices. Is there a way to get Walgreens to reimburse my sister for money she should have not paid?

Thank you for your help and time.

A: If your sister has been overpaying for prescriptions at Walgreens, there are steps you can take to seek reimbursement. While there is no guarantee that Walgreens will reimburse the difference, it is worth trying, especially given her age and health situation.

First, gather all the receipts and documentation of the higher prices she paid at Walgreens. Then, obtain the lower price information from GoodRX for the same prescriptions during the same time period. This comparison will help demonstrate the discrepancy in pricing.

Next, contact Walgreens customer service or visit the pharmacy where the prescriptions were filled. Explain the situation clearly, emphasizing your sister’s age and health condition, and present the evidence of the price differences. Request a reimbursement for the overpaid amounts. If Walgreens is unresponsive or unwilling to help, you may consider filing a complaint with the California Board of Pharmacy or seeking assistance from a consumer protection agency.

Additionally, moving forward, ensure your sister uses GoodRX or another discount service to avoid overpaying for her medications. Documenting your attempts and keeping a record of all communications with Walgreens will be important in case you need to escalate the issue further.
