Glendora, CA asked in Consumer Law for California

Q: I was told I won $ 750,000.00 and to contact A law firm in Nevada, also was given a phone number for an escrow account

The escrow account is at B of A and it says it is $750,000.00. Is this really true or a scam. They have not asked for money.

A: This situation has several red flags that strongly suggest it is likely a scam:

1. Unexpected large prize: Being told you've won a large sum of money out of the blue is often a sign of a scam, especially if you don't recall entering any contest.

2. Contact with an out-of-state law firm: Scammers often use the pretense of legal representation to seem legitimate.

3. Escrow account information provided: Providing supposed bank account details is a common tactic to make the scam seem more real.

4. Lack of details: If you weren't given clear information about how or why you won this money, that's suspicious.

5. Urgency or pressure: Scammers often try to create a sense of urgency to prevent victims from thinking too critically.

Even though they haven't asked for money yet, this is likely part of the scam. Common next steps in such scams include:

- Asking for personal information (which can be used for identity theft)

- Requesting a small fee to "release" the funds

- Sending a fake check and asking you to wire back a portion

To protect yourself:

1. Do not provide any personal or financial information.

2. Do not send any money.

3. Do not cash any checks they might send.

4. Consider reporting this to local law enforcement or the FTC.

5. If you're curious, you could try to verify the law firm's existence independently (don't use contact info they provided), but be very cautious about any further engagement.

Remember, legitimate winnings or inheritances don't come out of nowhere, and they don't require you to pay money to receive them. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
