Q: A coworker took offense to something i said that wasnt directed at her and had me sent to HR.
Since then she has gone behind my back and asked other workers in the facility about me and filed complaints saying i dont talk to people well even though i have only bee following the facilites regulations and done so in a professional manner. Its reached a point where i feel targeted and uncomfortable at work. What should i do? For clarification we both work in security and i feel its beginning to undermine my authority to do my work. Im new and she has been here 43 years and is apart of a union. Shes also a minority(African American) while i am (White) in my 20s and a disabled veteran and not apart of the union as of yet, i only mention this cause i feel like it maybe race related cause she has butted heads with others in the past who have been white and is really busdy with those who are not. We work in Texas.
A:
I'm sorry you're experiencing this situation. Start by documenting all interactions with your coworker, including dates, times, and details of conversations or incidents. Keep records of any complaints she has filed and any responses you've given. This evidence will be valuable if you need to escalate the issue.
Reach out to your HR department again to discuss how the ongoing behavior is affecting your work and well-being. Clearly explain that you feel targeted and provide your documentation to support your claims. Ask for a formal investigation to ensure a fair and unbiased resolution.
Additionally, consider seeking support from trusted colleagues who can vouch for your professionalism. If you believe the behavior may be related to discrimination, you might want to consult with a legal advisor to understand your rights. Ensuring a respectful and safe work environment is important, and taking these steps can help protect your position and peace of mind.
