Q: Hello I gave notice to my rental office that I would vacate my unit on October 31, 2024. I moved my things out on Sunday
Hello I gave a 60 day notice to my rental office that I would vacate my unit on October 31, 2024. I moved my things out on Sunday October 27th, 2024 and left the keys in the drop box because I am moving over an hour away and it would be a hassle to return them this week. Yesterday as I was unpacking I realized that I had left some very expensive valuables stored away in my bedroom closet because I intended to take them with me and didn’t want the movers to misplace them. I quickly called the rental office (yesterday was the 31st and technically the last day of my lease) and was told that the valuables had been tossed out because I had turned in my keys. Do I have any recourse here? The items CLEARLY weren’t trash and I’m more than certain they have them. I’m in Prince George’s County Maryland
A: Not really. Once you turned back possession of the premises, they were legally entitled to come in and dispose of anything remaining. The Landlord would generally be protected in this type of situation.
