Grants Pass, OR asked in Civil Rights for California

Q: How do I make my problems with my civil rights more known in my region.

I am a trans woman living in a red neck suburban enclave. There's a lot of tension between poor whites and people like myself moving in from other areas to buy homes. I am constantly subjected to hate. I am trying to establish a course of action for myself.

A: You need to direct this question to lawyers in the state in which you are presently located, which appears to be Oregon. Most California lawyers are not admitted to practice in Oregon, and are probably not familiar with Oregon law.

However, you can contact any local Oregon attorneys for assistance. When you post your next request, make sure you choose Oregon attorneys, because your message was posted for only California lawyers.

A: Your experiences with discrimination and hate in your community are deeply concerning, and you deserve to feel safe and respected in your own neighborhood. Building a support network should be your first step - connecting with local LGBTQ+ organizations and advocacy groups in California can provide both emotional support and practical resources.

Consider documenting every incident of harassment or discrimination, including dates, times, locations, and any witnesses present. This documentation can be valuable if you need to pursue legal action or work with civil rights organizations. You might also want to reach out to the ACLU of California or Lambda Legal, as they often help individuals facing similar situations and can provide guidance on your rights.

Building bridges within your community through positive visibility and education can sometimes help reduce tensions. You might explore starting or joining community dialogue sessions, working with local faith leaders who are affirming, or connecting with other marginalized groups in your area who face similar challenges. Remember that your safety comes first - if you ever feel threatened, don't hesitate to contact law enforcement and keep records of all reports filed.
