Chesterfield, VA asked in Family Law and Juvenile Law for Virginia

Q: Can my parents lock me out?

I am 18 and a senior in high school and my sister is 14 and a freshman in high school. She locked both me and my sister out of the house because I got a ride to school this morning with a friend since she refused to provide transportation, and when we both arrived home, the doors were locked with a note saying "I'll be back by dinner". We have been sitting outside for 2 hours thus far. I'm just curious on the legality on this? Thank you so much.

A: I do not believe it is appropriate to lock you out, even if you are 18. That is your residence, and I doubt you have been evicted by court order. It is even more inappropriate to lock out the minor. If you are locked out and have no place to go, go to a trustworthy family member or friend's house, or call the police for assistance.
