A: Consulting with a family law attorney is a great start, and most offer a free initial consultation. The question posted here is not very specific. An attorney would need to know if the parties are in agreement or whether this will be a contested case. There are multiple judicial council forms to fill out. You will also need a petition and summons to start a case, but if there is a current case, declarations of disclosure will be required if those have not been filed. You may be able to hire a lawyer on a limited scope basis if you don't have a complex case. A consultation will be key. Lawyers could write so much on this post, but a consultation will narrow the issues.
