A: I cannot speak for what is customary in all of California, but I can say that copying the secretary is a prudent and appropriate action for several important reasons. I am curious why you would have a problem with that.

And the secretary relying in lieu of the attorney is also not unethical or inappropriate depending on the nature of the communication.

Ultimately, if you do not like how your attorney (or his or her office) communicates with you, speak to the attorney. If you are not satisfied with the response, you are free to find another attorney.

Good luck to you.

A: Whether the attorney or the staff communicate directly with you is very much dependent on the individual firm culture.
