Highland, CA asked in Consumer Law and Collections for California

Q: Is this a scam?

I was emailed by a supposed debt collector threatening to sue me. The mail contains no physical address, who the parent company is through the main company. Lists several companies. Threatens to garnish my wages and freeze my bank. Also, threatens to contact employer. They have several misspelling and grammatical errors in their email. Started settlement process but they only allow payment through paypal using paypal or credit card. They have no website and use a gmail address. They also do not have the they are a debt collector statement when you call them. The emails read the same even when coming from two different people. I have contacted my creditors and none of them are doing this.

A: Collection scams are rampant and this sounds like a scam.

A: There are certain magic words and warnings they must give. I am not familiar with those words/warnings. SOUNDS like not necessarily a scam but, still unlawful debt collection? I'd seek an attorney who handles unfair debt collection and I'd be VERY wary of giving them a nickel as that could maybe potentially revive an old debt, something that was NOT collectible legally and then would be? Talk to a debt defense atty immediately...

A: I'm thinking scam
