Is it ethical for any prosecutor, who is fully informed, to press a defendant into a package plea deal where the defendant is not guilty of a crime that has already been adjudicated in a civil setting (civil harassment restraining order) and found to be unproven, as part of a package deal of other non-related charges? In other words, plead guilty to a lesser charge that is baseless in order to drop charges that may or may not have merit.
A: You should discuss any plea deal with your lawyer before agreeing to anything. This is a question which is best suited for the lawyer who is representing you in the criminal matter. If you do not have one yet, you can ask one to be appointed for you if you cannot afford to retain your own attorney. I advise against agreeing to any deal simply because you were pressured into it by a prosecutor. If you feel that is happening to you, you can protest to the judge before whom you appear and ask for a lawyer to be appointed to represent you.
