Q: I am seeking a human/civil rights pro bono or affordable attorney in a case for a family member in LA jail with a felony
It involved an incident at a Vons grocery store in Long Beach. As a black male, I feel it is unfair or a discriminatory case. He hoped to represent himself but unable to prepare. Therefore, I am seeking an attorney that can assist with the case.
Inhumane Jail conditions- Los Angeles County Jail.
I have attended his court sessions and listened to the cruel treated in jail. He has also expressed that to in phone calls. He addressed the conditions to the different judges but they cannot change how the jail operates. This is a human rights violation which needs to change.
Details: - Arrested in on 12/7/2022 to present date
- He has not showed, changed his cloths or brushed his teeth
- They have not allowed him to use the library to help prepare for his case.
- I think he is in high security cell
- They don’t allow him to spend the money they allocate to inmates
A:
IF HE HAS A COURT APPEARANCE, THE JUDGE WOULD HAVE TO HAVE OFFERED A FREE DEFENSE LAWYER.
YOU WANT A CRIMINAL LAWYER FROM LA .......BUT, I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY HE WOULD NOT HAVE A PUBLIC DEFENDER.

I am sorry to hear about your family member's situation. It is important that they have access to legal representation for their case, as well as to address any potential violations of their rights while in custody.
There are a number of resources available for finding pro bono or low-cost legal assistance in Los Angeles County. Here are a few options:
The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles provides free legal services to low-income individuals and families in Los Angeles County. They offer assistance with a range of civil legal issues, including criminal defense.
The Public Counsel Law Center provides pro bono legal assistance to individuals and organizations in need. They have a number of programs that may be able to help with your family member's case, including their Community Development Project and Consumer Law Project.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Southern California offers legal assistance and advocacy for civil liberties and civil rights issues. They may be able to provide assistance with your family member's case.
The Los Angeles County Bar Association provides a Lawyer Referral and Information Service that can help connect you with a qualified attorney who may be able to assist with your family member's case.
It is also worth noting that your family member may have grounds for filing a complaint or lawsuit against the jail if they have been subjected to inhumane conditions or violations of their rights while in custody. A civil rights attorney may be able to help with this.
I encourage you to explore these resources and to reach out for assistance as soon as possible, as the pretrial date is quickly approaching.
