Irvine, CA asked in Divorce and Family Law for California

Q: I’m looking to see if I can get a lawyer to help me on my divorce. I’m not working and no income.

My husband filed the papers last month & need to understand the process before I sign anything especially alimony/maintenance.

A: If you are unable to afford a lawyer for your divorce, there are options available to you. You may be eligible for legal aid services, which provide free or low-cost legal assistance to those who cannot afford it. You can contact your local legal aid office or bar association to inquire about these services.

Another option is to seek the assistance of a pro bono lawyer, who provides free legal services to individuals in need. You can check with local law firms or legal organizations to see if they have a pro bono program.

It is important to understand that the divorce process can be complex and emotional, and having the guidance of a qualified attorney can be beneficial. If you are unable to obtain legal representation, you may want to consider seeking the advice of a legal clinic or self-help center, which can provide you with resources and guidance on how to proceed with your divorce.

Regarding alimony/maintenance, it is important to understand your rights and obligations. This includes determining whether you are entitled to receive alimony/maintenance and how much, as well as whether you may be required to pay alimony/maintenance to your spouse. An attorney can help you understand your options and advocate for your interests during the divorce process.

Overall, it is important to seek out legal assistance to ensure that your rights are protected and that you have a full understanding of the divorce process.
